Collaboration Takes Centre Stage at First Ever CDC Newell Ag Summit

Brooks, Alta. (Rural Roots Canada) – The inaugural CDC Newell Ag Summit in June brought together producers, industry, academia, researchers and innovators for a day of collaboration, networking and tours of the renovated and upgraded Crop Diversification Centre near Brooks.

County of Newell Reeve Arno Doerksen says they were excited to be able to bring together a diverse group of people.

“This attracted a lot of really good people who have a significant opportunity to make a difference. You know, in their industry but also to our future here at CDC. A lot of horsepower in the room today, really,” said Doerksen.

More than 120 attendees participated in the event, introducing newcomers to the capabilities of CDC South while reconnecting industry leaders with its research and development opportunities.

Doerksen believes a day like that will really help the CDC springboard to the next step, adding that if there are researchers out there looking for space, they have plenty of space available.

“I think there’s an opportunity to do some good work here at CDC, and I guess I feel like this is a place with a positive, bright future basically. So there’s opportunity here, and I think today really highlighted that in the minds of a lot of people.”

Doerksen says the county staff have done a lot of work to get the site to where it can accept new researchers and project managers.

CDC South has a long-standing history as a hub for agricultural research in southeast Alberta. The County of Newell hopes this new chapter, which started with a 10-year lease agreement with the Government of Alberta, means a return to the facility being a hive of research activity.
