Hail Report: Crop insurers “working seven days a week” as storms continue to damage crops

Canadian Prairies (Rural Roots Canada) – Crop insurers are working around the clock to work through claims as storms continue to batter crops across the Prairies.

It has been a summer of hail, rain, and strong winds throughout the Prairies, according to the Canadian Crop Hail Association (CCHA). It’s asking farmers to remain patient as loss adjusters work through the claims as quickly and efficiently as possible.

“Our adjusting team is working seven days a week to stay on top of the volume of claims,” said Scott McQueen, with Palliser Insurance. “In some areas, extremely wet field conditions continue to create challenges and may result in slight delays in completing inspections and finalizing claims.”

Between July6-19, there were more than 1,650 crop damage claims filed from storms rolling through. Heavy losses are being reported in areas of Saskatchewan, such as Nipawin and Codette. Claim numbers will likely continue to rise as more crops are assessed, according to Brian Bernauer with Rain and Hail Insurance Services.

“Heavy winds came with storms that went through northern Saskatchewan on July 11, blowing over grain bins and uprooting trees,” said Bernauer.
