Ottawa, Ont. (Rural Roots Canada) – Farmers will have access to more interest-free cash through the Advance Payments Program in 2o26.

Agriculture Minister Heath MacDonald says the interest-free portion for non-canola advances will be at $250,000, up from the usual $100,000.

The program allows producers to access up to $1 million in advances, based on the expected value of their products, with the federal government covering interest on the interest-free portion.

In a release, MacDonald says this is about helping farmers manage costs, “while giving them flexibility to market their products on their terms.”

The feds estimate about 8,600 producers will benefit in 2026, with roughly $37.4 million in added interest savings.

Canola advances remain at a higher $500,000 interest-free limit, introduced last September in response to tariffs imposed on Canadian canola products
